King’s Norton Hospital, our acute mental health service that supports adults with severe and complex mental health conditions in Birmingham, welcomed a very special new visitor this week – a therapy dog named Ted.

Ted’s arrival was welcomed eagerly by both patients and staff, with many sharing how much his presence lifted their spirits. One patient said, “It gave me something to look forward to,” while another commented, “I felt quite low this morning, but this changed things in a really good way.” Others described the visit as having “really brightened my day.”

The Therapy team at King’s Norton noted a noticeable positive engagement on the ward.

Ted’s visits are led by the Occupational Therapy team, which includes ward-based therapy dog sessions designed to support emotional well-being, reduce anxiety, and encourage structured social interaction.

The sessions aim to bring a sense of calm and connection to the ward environment – and judging by Ted’s first day, it’s already making a difference.
