At Conifer Lodge, our residential service for adults with autism and learning disabilities in Cambridgeshire, the individuals we support are encouraged to live their best lives.
We don’t just focus on self-care and daily living skills; we also look at building confidence. Sometimes, that means helping to rebuild meaningful connections with loved ones. One such journey has been that of an individual we support who has made incredible strides in building family relationships.
With the support of the team, he continues to thrive in the supportive environment at Conifer Lodge.
Over time, the individual we support had developed a strong rapport with the team, a foundation that would prove important as he began the emotional process of reconnecting with his family.
Senior Support Worker Claire was key in helping him build bridges with his loved ones. When he first met his sister again after many years apart, he was filled with emotion – a mix of excitement and nerves. The meeting marked a turning point, leading to further visits and a renewed sense of belonging.
Encouraged by these positive experiences, the individual we support reconnected with his mother, and the family began spending time together more regularly. Claire continued to support the family dynamic, helping to coordinate visits and offering encouragement and reassurance to all involved.
Today, he enjoys regular time with his family, including attending barbecues and special outings. His loved ones have visited Conifer Lodge, where they’ve been warmly welcomed by both the individuals we support and staff.
Looking ahead, his family is planning a holiday to a local seaside resort and hopes to include him – a reflection of how far they’ve all come together.
The individual we support said, “I’m happy seeing my mum, sister and friend, especially when Claire takes me.”
Claire’s consistent support and care were recognised with a nomination for Star of the Month, a fitting tribute to the trust and understanding she helped nurture.
Claire is happy to have played her part: “It’s a privilege to be part of this journey and to see the power of relationships rebuilt through patience, care, and compassion.”
