Rehab Without Walls, one of the companies within our case management division, recently shared the story of their client, Lee, and his journey to recovery.
Lee, a resilient individual, experienced life-altering changes after a motorbike accident in 1997 that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. His condition left him with poor balance, short-term memory loss, and a reliance on alcohol, which he used to cope. By the time Rehab Without Walls Case Manager, Chris, met Lee, he was drinking up to four bottles of alcohol a day, often feeling isolated. His GP warned him that he wouldn’t survive much longer if he continued his destructive habits.
When Chris first took on Lee’s case, he knew the journey would be complex. Lee was initially resistant to traditional addiction support. However, Chris’ approach was unconventional yet compassionate. He replaced Lee’s existing Support Workers with a new team, including Rob, an experienced Support Worker with a background in alcohol addiction. Rob’s positive influence had an immediate impact, helping Lee to form healthier habits, like cooking full meals, shopping for nutritious food, and reducing his alcohol intake.
Over time, the Case Manager supported Lee to reconnect with the world. He rediscovered his love for snooker and attended the World Championship final. With Rob’s support, Lee joined a chess club and began regularly attending matches. He also started a cookery class, learning new skills and gaining confidence.
Lee’s progress extended to his physical health as well. The Case Manager organised support of a new Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist and Lee began engaging in therapy, something he had initially resisted. He now has regular sessions, including targeted physio to improve his archery skills, a sport he had enjoyed before his injury.
In the summer of 2024, Lee went on his first abroad holiday in 12 years, a 10-day Norwegian cruise. This was the culmination of several smaller trips to Whitby, the Midlands, and Wales, where Lee had successfully managed his alcohol consumption. His holiday was a huge success and marked a significant milestone in his recovery.
Lee describes his journey as a “new lease of life.” His physical and mental health have improved, and his relationships with his family have strengthened. With continued support from Chris and his team, Lee is now thriving and ready to embrace the future with renewed confidence.
