On 2nd October 2023, the team at Kings Norton Hospital, our 32-bed Acute Mental Health Service in Birmingham, were delighted to be visited by esteemed guest speaker, Professor Ramalingam Chithiramohan, who presented a lecture focused on Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia and Evidence-based Combination Treatments. The lecture was shared with medical colleagues at our other Acute Mental Health Service, Holybourne Hospital in London as part of Active Care Group’s Medical Academic Programme.

Professor Chithiramohan is a Consultant Psychiatrist and former Deputy Medical Director and Director of Governance and Service Effectiveness at Birmingham and Solihull Mental health Foundation Trust. He is a visiting Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Madras and has been a Clinical Tutor and Director Medical Education for many years. He has served on the Court of Electors and the Council of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Professor Chithiramohan has been very active in postgraduate medical education throughout his career and has extensive teaching interests. He has delivered more than 1500 invited lectures on a range of topics in the UK and abroad. He is currently actively involved with the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) in delivering education in low and middle income countries, and has developed a number of online training modules. Professor Chithiramohan is also a member of the WPA action panel on evidence-based psychopharmacology and contributes to a number of worldwide webinars on the subject.

During the lecture, they learnt and discussed updates to evidence based practice in relation to treatment of both negative and positive symptoms of Schizophrenia. It was a very enjoyable session and the team benefitted from catching up with Professor Chithiramohan, who many of the team know from their work within the Birmingham area.

Professor Chithiramohan will be attending Kings Norton Hospital again in December where he plans to deliver a lecture regarding medical developments in the long-term treatment of insomnia.
