A new gym has officially opened its doors at our King’s Norton Hospital in Birmingham, offering patients receiving acute mental health support enhanced fitness and wellbeing opportunities.

The hospital, which supports adults living with severe and complex mental health conditions, has introduced the gym as part of its ongoing commitment to wellbeing and recovery-focused care.

The gym was developed in direct response to feedback from the hospital’s community meetings, where patients shared the importance of physical activity in their recovery. Equipped with a cross-trainer, multi-gym, treadmill, and space for aerobic classes, the facility provides a safe and tailored environment for movement and engagement.

Craig Ward, Hospital Director at King’s Norton Hospital, said:

“The gym is an example of how King’s Norton Hospital is creating a positive, therapeutic environment for people experiencing acute mental health challenges – and a supportive, forward-thinking place to work for our dedicated teams.”

The hospital’s occupational therapy team will work closely with patients to incorporate gym sessions into individual care plans, alongside other activities such as community football and boxing. These sessions are part of the broader Active Rec programme, designed to enhance daily functioning, build confidence, and promote social interaction.

To ensure safe delivery, a qualified fitness instructor has joined the hospital team and will oversee scheduled sessions, providing staff and patients with the tools to build healthy routines and promote holistic recovery.

Following its recent Good rating from the CQC, the new gym enhances the King’s Norton Hospital’s therapeutic offering, underscoring its patient-centred approach and commitment to listening to and responding to patients’ needs.
