Mental Health Awareness Week 2021

This year, Mental Health Awareness week is more important than ever to highlight issues we have all been facing over the course of the pandemic. May 10th-16th is a designated time to spread awareness, explore different aspects of mental health, and most importantly to break taboo and start the conversation with those around us, as you never know who may be struggling.

Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation for the last 21 years, this year’s theme will be all about embracing Nature. With daily walks becoming a simple luxury in our lives over the last year, it is clear to see why almost two thirds of UK adults (65%) said that being close to nature made them feel positive emotions such as joy, calm and wonder.

Active Care Group is dedicated to ensuring that all our staff have the opportunity to head outside and connect with nature as often as possible. Our Marketing Team are currently trialling ‘walking compatible’ Microsoft Teams meetings to combat the video call fatigue we have all experienced this year. This means they can pop their headphones in and get out and about for a walk in the fresh air which is great for boosting creativity. It allows them to be in the moment and focus on the task at hand without the added distraction of emails and other messages popping up.

In honour of Mental Health Awareness week and the theme for this year, our staff from across the Group have sent us lovely nature pictures captured by themselves to inspire others to get up and moving and explore the beauty that nature has to offer. Check out these nature shots on our social media pages here!

Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation has also commented, “Nature can be a powerful ally in protecting our mental health, preventing distress and ensuring good mental wellbeing.” Nature is central to our overall health and an undeniable resource for a mentally healthy future. We recommend everyone to get involved and connect with nature in your own ways, whether this be adopting some new house plants or going for a countryside walk. Either way, take the time to notice the positive impact it can have on your mental health and aim to embrace nature into your everyday life.

Whilst we are raising awareness about the benefits of nature as a great way to release endorphins and promote wellbeing, it is important to note that nature is not a solution. If you are looking for advice and guidance, please visit mentalhealth.org.uk for more informative resources
