At Murdostoun Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Neurological Care Centre, we offer neurorehabilitation, care and support to people over the age of 16 years with a brain injury or other neurological condition, helping every person we support feel safe, happy, empowered enabling them to live the best life possible.

Murdostoun Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Neurological Care Centre is located in Newmains, Wishaw. We are proud to run neurorehabilitation program with one of the longest traditions in Scotland.
Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre
This service is suitable for people who require specialist inpatient rehabilitation to address their ongoing cognitive, communication, physical or other diminished functions due to injury or disease of nervous system.
Our team of highly skilled rehab professionals work closely together to ensure that every team member is working towards the same patient-centred goals and that all therapies are focused on the areas that will enable patients to achieve those relevant, clearly defined and agreed goals.
Our experienced multi-disciplinary team includes Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Psychologists and a Consultants in Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Psychiatry. Our multi-disciplinary teams are experienced in managing associated needs, such as specialist spasticity management, tracheostomy care, PEG feeds and skin integrity problems.
We most commonly assess and admit patients who are in the very early stages of recovery from a brain injury from a NHS hospital. We also assess and treat people who have been living with a brain injury for some time, but due to a change in their situation, would benefit from some treatment or require a period of respite.
We cooperate closely with expert from other health institutions and primary care health and social teams.
Neurological Care Centre
- Our slow-stream service is for individuals who need more time to practise new skills before moving back home or into the community. They may or may not have undertaken some specialist rehabilitation first.
- Our complex disability service is for individuals with complex problems associated with their condition and who can no longer be looked after easily at home.

Murdostoun Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre provides specialist care for up to 46 residents at any one time.
Extensive gardens
Murdostoun is set in a rural location surround by beautiful scenery which extends into our lavish garden areas.
Minibus for outings
Day trips and other outings are always pre-planned and we like to travel in style with our own minibus allowing for safe travel.
Independent living flats
A specially designed therapy kitchen allows users to learn new skills that will serve them long after they’ve left our care.
Gymnasium
We have a gymnasium where all residents are encouraged to keep themselves active and socialise with others.
Hydrotherapy pool
A state-of-the-art therapy pool allows our residents to focus on re-gaining cognitive abilities that may have been lost.
Meet the Team

Paula Gribben

Paula Gribben
Paula qualified as an occupational therapist in 2000 from Glasgow Caledonian University, working in NHS, local authority, and voluntary sectors until joining Murdostoun in 2006.
Paula has worked in brain injury rehabilitation for the majority of her career. She has undertaken further specialist academic and clinical training in the field neurorehabilitation and assessment.
At present, Paula is the Head of Therapy at Murdostoun. Paula is an active member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy Specialty Section in neurological practice and is the chair of the West of Scotland forum. Paula is the secretary for the Scottish Head Injury Forum. Paula is also registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Catherine McEwan

Catherine McEwan
Kate started as a staff nurse in the brain injury rehabilitation unit at Murdostoun in 2000. She was then promoted to team leader in 2005, and left the brain injury unit in 2010 to go to a new brain injury unit in Springburn.
Kate returned to Murdostoun in 2013 as senior staff nurse. After two years, she became unit manager. She stayed in the neurodisability care centre for six years in total, then moved to the brain injury unit in 2019 as senior staff nurse.
Kate has always worked in brain injury rehabilitation as she finds it a very rewarding job.

Janet Froggo

Janet Froggo
Janet has worked as a speech and language therapist at the Murdostoun Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre periodically since 1990, having most recently returned in 2021.
She qualified as a speech and language therapist in Manchester in 1980. She worked in a variety of speech and language therapy posts before joining the company, then known as Scotcare Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre in 1990. This is where she began to develop her experience and specialism in the field of acquired brain injury.
In 2000, she left the organisation in order to set up and manage the West Lothian Community Brain Injury Service as part of NHS Lothian, where she remained for 11 years. She took early retirement and moved to Italy in 2011 but returned to Scotland the following year and again began part-time work as a speech and language therapist at Murdostoun, while also working on an independent basis for case management services and for Neural Pathways. Janet retired again in 2018 and moved to Cheshire, only to return in 2021 to recommence her speech and language therapy role at Murdostoun.
