Specialist post-acute rehabilitation through to specialist care pathways.

At Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, we are specialists in the treatment of patients over the age of 18 with physical and cognitive impairments and/or neuropsychiatric disorders resulting from a brain injury or other neurological condition. We support our patients through assessment, rehabilitation, support and care across two wards.

There are two wards in our Blackheath site: Thames Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit which has twenty-one beds and Heathside Unit which has eighteen beds. Across the two wards we provide assessment, rehabilitation, support and care. 

Level 1 regional specialist rehabilitation

This regional service is for people with complex cognitive and/or behavioural problems following a brain injury or as a result of a neurological condition. They have complex nursing and therapy needs requiring input from a highly specialist inter-disciplinary team, and treatment facilities unlikely to be available locally.

Patients are usually in the very early stages of recovery from their brain injury and are usually admitted from an acute hospital once they are medically stable.

Level 2 specialist rehabilitation

This service is suitable for people who require specialist inpatient rehabilitation and have ongoing physical therapy needs.

Our team work closely together to ensure that every team member is working towards the same practical, realistic goals and that all therapies are focused on the areas that will enable patients to achieve those clearly defined and agreed goals.

Our team includes qualified nurses (RMN, RGN and RNLD), physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, social workers and sessional visits from a consultant in rehabilitation medicine and a weekly GP ward round. The clinical team are fully supported by rehabilitation assistants and technicians, administrators, housekeeping and catering staff and a maintenance team.

Patients aged 18 and over (or patients aged 16-18 subject to discussion with local paediatric teams) who are recovering from the following organic neurological conditions:

  • Acquired brain injury of any cause
  • Patients requiring complex spasticity management
  • Complex polytrauma where brain injury is the predominant presentation
  • Patients with moderate-severe cognitive issues post acquired brain injury
  • Patients with behavioural difficulties post acquired brain injury
  • Peripheral neuromuscular disease e.g. Guillain Barré syndrome, critical illness neuropathy
  • Polymyositis (HNDU)
  • Patients with neurodegenerative disorders (e.g. multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease etc.) requiring specialist rehabilitation
  • Other complex needs

39 bedrooms

Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre provides specialist neurological rehabilitation for up to 39 patients at any one time across two units.

Shared bathroom

We have shared bathroom facilities which fully support our patients no matter what their cognitive impairments.

Recreational equipment

Recreational equipment is readily available allowing our service users to interact which each other in a communal way.

Therapy kitchen

A specially designed therapy kitchen allows users to learn new skills that will serve them long after they’ve left our care.

Gymnasium

We have a gymnasium where all patients are encouraged to keep themselves active and socialise with others.

Spasticity management

At Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation centre we have specialist on-site spasticity management.
