Colleagues from King’s Norton Hospital, our acute mental health service that supports adults with severe and complex mental health conditions in Birmingham, recently took part in an away day.

Staff from Hope Ward – our 12-bed acute mental health service for women – began the day with a psychology session focused on mindfulness and group work. The session had a light tone, which helped staff feel more comfortable and confident in engaging with the activities ahead.

The occupational therapy team then delivered an informative session to help others understand how occupational therapy supports patients on the ward and how this work contributes to successful, person-centred outcomes.

The final session of the day brought together nursing staff to take part in care planning discussions, risk assessments, and “case-busting” exercises. Working in small “mini MDTs” (Multidisciplinary Teams), the groups shared ideas and experiences, contributing to robust care plans they could take back to the wider team.

Emma Bignell, Manager of Hope Ward, said:

“The away day was fantastic and engaging. Great food, dancing, and the staff built positive relationships in the team and showed compassion and kindness to each other.”

The day ended with a lively game of bowling, serving as a fun and team-spirited finale to an inspiring and engaging away day.
