King’s Norton Hospital, our acute mental health hospital in Birmingham, recently held an open day to showcase its newly refurbished facilities and welcomed the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Ken Wood, and Lady Mayoress Barbara Wood as guests.
The hospital, which supports adults with severe and complex mental health conditions, can accommodate up to 32 patients in its acute setting. The newly refurbished site features several therapy rooms and an occupational therapy kitchen to help individuals regain life skills and work towards independent living.
In addition to meeting with members of the Active Care Group senior executive team and healthcare professionals, Hospital Director Craig Ward guided the Mayor and Mayoress through the service. The tour included visiting all wards, the therapy suite, the sports area to promote physical well-being, and the multi-faith room, which provides a quiet space for reflection and spiritual support.
King’s Norton Hospital’s Medical Director, Dr Yousuf Zakaria, led a presentation for the Mayor and Mayoress, highlighting the hospital’s role as one of the UK’s largest specialist mental health facilities. Dr Yousuf outlined the vital work carried out by the hospital’s multidisciplinary team (MDT), which includes consultants, speciality doctors, psychologists, and occupational therapists. The MDT work closely with patients, offering a range of interventions designed to promote recovery and support a smooth transition home, or provide ongoing care within the community.
The Lord Mayor said of the day “The Lord Mayor of Birmingham said of their visit, “The Lady Mayoress and I were delighted to be able to visit the newly refurbished facilities at the Kings Norton Hospital supporting people with very serious and complex mental health issues. We were impressed with the high standard of the facilities, especially those designed to support patients working towards living independently, and the caring and professional staff that we were privileged to meet. The services they are providing really are vital to the people of Birmingham.”
Hospital Director Craig Ward was delighted with the visit: “The open day reinforced King’s Norton’s dedication to delivering high-quality mental health care support to enhance patient experience and treatment outcomes”.
