We are pleased to announce that Hunters Moor, our neurological rehabilitation service for adults in Birmingham is now offering specialised tracheostomy care. This new provision enhances our commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality care tailored to the unique needs of our patients.
What is tracheostomy care?
Tracheostomy care involves the management of a tracheostomy, a medical procedure where a tube is inserted into the trachea to aid in breathing. This procedure is often necessary for patients who need a long-term ventilatory support due to conditions such as severe neurological disorders, traumatic brain injuries, or other medical issues that impede breathing.
At Hunters Moor, a dedicated team of qualified nurses will oversee day-to-day tracheostomy care. This includes:
- Daily tracheostomy management: Regular cleaning and maintenance of the tracheostomy tube to ensure it remains clear and functional as well as routine tube changes.
- Secretion management: Monitoring and managing secretions to prevent blockages and infections.
- Chest maintenance: Ensuring the patient’s respiratory health through routine checks and
- Support for those on weaning plans, working towards lessening their dependency and need for their tracheostomy.
- Ongoing specialist assessment and therapeutic input for those requiring their tracheostomy as they are in a prolonged disorder of consciousness (PDOC).
Each patient will receive personalised care plans tailored to their specific needs, ensuring a person-centred approach that prioritises their wellbeing.
