Throughout October, Holybourne Hospital, our Acute Mental Health service in London, celebrated Black History Month with some enjoyable and informative activities.
The therapy team at Holybourne Hospital delivered art and music workshops for patients and staff, particularly focusing on the 2023 Black History Month theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters’. The theme celebrates and highlights the achievements of black women. In the art workshops everyone was given artwork examples from black women, such as multimedia artist Emily Mulenga, as inspiration for their creations.
Andy Acquaye, Head of Nursing and Hospital Matron at Holybourne Hospital, held a day where he cooked traditional African food for patients and staff, and traditional African dress was worn by Andy and other staff members.
Ellice Thomas Clarke, Staff Nurse at Holybourne Hospital, undertook Spotlight interviews of staff members from different parts of the hospital team. The interviews focused on their cultural background and raised awareness of the different countries and backgrounds of the Holybourne staff.
Matt Beavis, Hospital Director at Holybourne Hospital said:
“It was great to highlight our staff and their talents, as well as learning more of their background and experiences to enable us all to develop and grow as a hospital and as people. We can’t wait to hold more celebratory events in the future.”
