Our Care Manager at Active Care Group, Fleur Bishop, is heading into the ring! She will be taking part in a Charity Boxing Match in July for Cancer Research UK.
We sat down with Fleur to ask her what inspired her to take part in the match, why the charity is important to her, and what she is most looking forward to.
What made you want to sign up for the charity boxing match?
“Well, I don’t think that there’s anybody that I’ve spoken to, or know of, that hasn’t been affected by cancer. It’s affected me and my family. There are people I know at work that it affects on a daily basis. I feel like it’s affected every single person in one way or another, and I wanted to take the opportunity to raise money and awareness for Cancer Research UK. I want to raise money and help save lives. I guess you could say ‘I’m going to take a beating to help beat cancer.’
“I also kept seeing it come up on Facebook! And a couple of my friends had taken part before, so I just thought why not?
“The event is hosted by Ultra White Collar Boxing who have now raised over £28 Million for Cancer Research UK. The next target is to hit £30 million.”
What are you most looking forward to about the match?
“I’m most looking forward to the training. Training has just started. We get 10 weeks training before the match and it’s good fun. Hard work and painful, but fun!
“I’ve actually boxed before 5 or 6 years ago but it was for fitness, not to fight in matches, and then this opportunity arose.
“I’m looking forward to the actual event too. The event itself is pretty big. It’s a black tie event with VIP tables and a lot goes into it. There’s also quite a lot of us fighting on the night.”
Who will you be fighting on the night?
“Everyone trains together in a group over the 10 weeks and then they match us with our boxing partner 2 weeks before the fight. We fight someone on the night that we’ve trained with over the few weeks – should be quite interesting.
“In terms of boxing rounds, we’ll have up to ten 3-minute rounds. I’m hoping it won’t go on that long and there will be a knockout!”
What is the personal target for your fundraising?
“We’re trying to raise a minimum of £500 each, and purchase at least one VIP table at the event, so it’s around £1000 altogether.”
The Charity Boxing Match will take place on Saturday 8th July.
If you are able to donate, Fleur would very much appreciate it.
