When Dr. Arin Devansh* arrived at King’s Norton Hospital, his bipolar disorder meant he was struggling with intense fluctuations in mood and his personal and social relationships had begun to suffer.

Arin’s time at King’s Norton Hospital lasted just three weeks, but in that short span, his life began to shift profoundly. Arin’s care involved a combination of medication, psychiatric consultation, psychotherapy, art and music therapy, dance, and yoga. He particularly appreciated the mindfulness sessions and the gentle and supportive presence of the Lakeside Ward staff, who brought a sense of calm and positivity into each day.

One of the most meaningful aspects of his recovery was the way the staff treated him not as a patient, but as a person. “They communicated with me so well,” said Arin. “They were non-judgemental and deeply professional. Every single day, they interacted with me in a way that made me feel safe, seen, and supported.”

Arin found great joy in activities shared with fellow patients and staff. He especially looked forward to music and art therapy, mindfulness practices, and group sessions that incorporated dance and yoga, something he described as both therapeutic and uplifting. Cooking sessions also became a highlight, offering moments of connection and creativity that supported his overall wellbeing.

His family visited during his stay, and their presence, combined with the unwavering support from the hospital team, played an important role in his healing. The Multi-Disciplinary Team worked closely with Arin’s family to prepare him for discharge, meeting with them regularly to discuss his treatment plan moving forward.

Arin benefited from the team, who helped him build confidence and regain a sense of independence. He has great appreciation for the team, including the Psychologists and Mental Health Nurses, all of whom brought not just clinical expertise but genuine warmth and kindness to his care.

Each day at King’s Norton Hospital gave Arin another small step forward. He learned to reflect, to breathe, and to find peace within himself. “They helped me reflect on who I am and how to get back on track,” he said. “They helped me stabilise, and most of all, they helped me believe in myself again.”

“I can’t describe it in words. It was really nice, everyone had amazing smiles on their faces. They truly helped to heal me.”

Now discharged and looking ahead with hope, Arin carries a renewed sense of purpose. His future aspiration is to open a meditation centre, a place where others can find the peace and healing that he experienced during his time at King’s Norton Hospital. “I want to radiate the bliss around,” he said.
