Toby – Cerebral Palsy

One of Anglia Case Management’s long-term clients has recently been awarded the Pride of Essex Inspirational Youth Award 2019, in recognition of his inspirational fundraising activities.

Toby, who has cerebral palsy and has been receiving case management services from Anglia Case Management for the past 8 years, has raised over £9,000 for Team Angus, helping to provide much-needed equipment and physiotherapy treatment for a little boy who also has cerebral palsy.

Despite only having begun walking with a frame a few years ago, Toby was determined to take part in a charity race, but after coming up against time and accessibility barriers that made it impossible, he and his support team decided to organise their own 400m accessible race – The Wheeler Way Walk – which took place in May.

In Toby’s words, the Wheeler Way Walk is about “Giving others in the same situation a chance to enter a race, which will be achievable and accommodating of their disability. This is not a race of time, it is an achievement to complete the distance and having the confidence to enter.

Toby’s Team Leader, Harriett, said: “He really is a wonderful young man. I’m so proud of all he has achieved and so proud that I have had the privilege of being on the great journey with him.”

Toby and his support team have continued to raise funds for Team Angus, with the team and Toby’s solicitor firm taking part in a sponsored skydive and Toby hosting a quiz in June.

Toby’s Case Manager, Lizzie, said: “Toby really deserves this award, he is an inspiration and an absolute joy to work with. Toby is always working to overcome any barriers he may face and has such an amazing attitude to life. He is already looking into more ways to volunteer his time and fundraise to ‘give back’ so watch this space for more exciting news!
