At Moorpark Place, our residential service for adults with learning disabilities and autism in North Ayrshire, we support individuals in developing their confidence and skills to help them live to the fullest.
One of the individuals we support, Martin, has made significant progress over recent months, particularly in terms of his well-being and communication.
Moorpark Place offers personalised support tailored to each individual’s needs. Martin receives one-to-one support, which includes daily assistance with routines, community engagement, and the development of independent living skills. Alongside this, he benefits from specialist input from our on-site clinical team, including a Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, and Speech and Language Therapist.
Martin’s journey has involved a great deal of trust-building and personal effort. With encouragement from his team and input from therapy sessions, he has developed new ways to understand and express his thoughts and emotions.
In the past, Martin sometimes found it difficult to express his frustrations in a safe manner, especially when he felt overwhelmed. At those times, his behaviour could become challenging as he tried to communicate his needs.
Through consistent support, patience, and a focus on positive communication strategies, Martin now feels more confident in using his voice to express his feelings. He is increasingly open with his support team and neighbours, sharing when something is bothering him or asking for help before things escalate. Where previously he may have struggled to make himself understood, Martin now knows that those around him are ready to listen.
The change has been noticeable across. Martin is now more at ease and engaged in his day-to-day interactions. Staff have noticed that this has resulted in Martin being calm and more confident in his outlook.
This progress has been made possible by several key factors:
- A consistent, person-centred approach from the Moorpark Place team
- On-going therapeutic support tailored to his needs and preferences
- A shared understanding among staff of the importance encouraging independence
Martin’s journey continues. However, he has reached a place where he is more comfortable, more connected, and more able to advocate for himself.
We are proud of how far Martin has come – well done, Martin!
