Colleagues and patients at King’s Norton Hospital, our acute mental health service that supports adults with severe and complex mental health conditions in Birmingham, came together recently to celebrate the richness of different cultures through a vibrant and uplifting culture day.
The event, hosted by the hospital’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) champion, Dominique, followed a patient and staff meeting called “Let’s Talk About It,” where the idea for a culture day was first introduced and warmly welcomed.
Patients played a key role in shaping the day. After speaking with them about what they’d like to see, our colleagues designed the day based on their feedback. Culture day featured food from around the world, t-shirts and flags representing different nations, and a host of fun activities, including yoga, arts and crafts, and face painting.
Speaking after the event, Dominique said:
“It’s very important to us at King’s Norton Hospital to celebrate different cultures and always find opportunities to learn from one another. As an Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) champion, I want everyone to feel welcome and appreciated – this day was about coming together and recognising the beauty of our differences.”
