Ellie arrived at Woodland Court, our supported living service for adults with complex needs in Surrey, after a difficult childhood shaped by instability and loss. She had experienced multiple placements and disruptions in care before eventually being adopted.
At the time, her adoptive family was unaware of the extent of her support needs. What seemed like a mild learning delay turned out to be more complex, and she was later diagnosed with behaviour support needs.
Encouraging Independence, One Step at a Time
Colleagues at Woodland Court work closely with Ellie to support her daily routines and build her confidence. From helping her maintain a tidy living space to encouraging healthy sleep habits, the team promotes responsibility while giving her the space to grow.
Ellie’s social development has been particularly significant in recent years. A personal loss several years ago marked a turning point in how she processes and expresses emotions, and she is now more able to articulate how she feels, including moments of sadness – something she once found very difficult.
Finding Purpose Through Responsibility
One key milestone in Ellie’s journey has been her transformation from someone anxious about routine procedures to someone confidently taking charge. In the early days at Woodland Court, Ellie found the weekly fire alarm test overwhelming. She would take measures to avoid the noise, often removing herself from the area well in advance. However, a conversation with staff about her maturity and responsibility inspired Ellie to take on a new challenge: becoming a fire marshal.
With gentle encouragement, Ellie attended a training session and gained her fire marshal certification. Now, she takes the lead during weekly drills, proudly wearing her official vest and carrying out her duties with confidence.
What was once a source of fear has become a point of pride.
Ellie says she feels “privileged” to contribute to her community in this way.
Building Connections Beyond the Service
Ellie also receives support from partner agencies to help her explore meaningful opportunities outside the service. Through a local employment support programme, she’s secured a part-time volunteer role at a nearby charity shop. This role, which requires just a couple of hours a week, has helped boost Ellie’s self-esteem and sense of purpose.
With continued support, she is now exploring further opportunities, including one in the media sector – an exciting step toward future independence.
Independence Through Support
With ongoing encouragement and consistent structure, Ellie has flourished. The combination of her determination, tailored support from staff at Woodland Court, and partnership with external organisations has helped her become more self-sufficient and hopeful about the future. Her story shows how building trust and offering meaningful responsibility can help individuals turn obstacles into opportunities for growth.
Well done, Ellie – we are so proud of you!
