As part of International Nurses Day, we take a look into a day in the life of one of our colleagues. Sophie is a Healthcare Assistant based at our neuro residential services Bethany House and Bethany Lodge, based in Kent.
“I am a Healthcare Assistant at Bethany House and Bethany Lodge. I work in neuro-residential living services within Active Care Group (ACG).
My healthcare journey didn’t start with a master plan. I have always been curious about how the body works, how illnesses impact people differently, and how we can help improve quality of life through care. That curiosity led me to become a Healthcare Assistant, and over time, my interest in the field grew into something deeper and more meaningful.
After joining Bethany Services in 2011, I gained hands-on experience and soaked up everything I could. I eventually completed my Level 3 in Health and Social Care and my functional skills in maths. Those qualifications opened the door for me to start the Nursing Associate apprenticeship in 2023, which has been a turning point in my career”.
Morning Routine
“My day begins with a handover from the night team. This is when I catch up on anything that’s happened overnight and any concerns, we need to keep an eye on. Then, it goes straight into supporting residents with their morning routine, helping with personal care, administering medication, and assisting with clinical tasks like wound care and observations. It’s a fast-paced but rewarding start to the day, filled with meaningful interactions”.
Tuesdays: Learning Time
“Tuesdays are different for me. I spend a day dedicated to learning and development. I use this time to update care plans, attend our morning meetings, and deepen my clinical knowledge. I support nurses with medication administration and more complex tasks like wound assessments. I’m also involved in safeguarding, making referrals when necessary, and ensuring follow-up actions are communicated to the team. It’s a day that balances learning, leadership, and hands-on care”.
Teamwork makes the dream work!
“Throughout the day, I ensure everything runs smoothly. I delegate tasks noted in the diary and check in with carers to provide support as needed. I also carry out regular audits at both Bethany House and Bethany Lodge. It’s a key part of ensuring we maintain high standards and continually look for ways to improve. Before the day ends, I complete all my documentation and hand it over to the night team to keep continuity of care seamless”.
The Bigger Picture
“Looking back, I’ve learned a lot, not just about nursing, but about myself. I’m more resilient and capable than I gave myself credit for. I’ve grown in confidence and found strength in being adaptable.
Active Care Group has played a huge role in that growth. Their support has enabled me to study while continuing to work, which is a game changer when you have a young family. I’m incredibly grateful for the support from my colleagues, the nursing team, and especially our Clinical Lead, who’s been a strong advocate for my learning and development”.
Active Care Group is currently supporting Sophie in her pathway of training in becoming a nurse associate.
